The Jumpsuit

The popularity of the jumpsuit in modern apparel is definitely the major fashion contribution of my career. From 1978 to 1990, Regina Kravitz was a top label in the emerging contemporary market.

My clothing was soft and sexy, predominantly in rayon crepe, tissue faille, and a wide assortment of prints. My dresses were considered "day to dinner," and hung with Nicole Miller, DVF, and other "dress" labels of the  time.

The jumpsuit developed as a mistake. At the end of each season, we would keep our sample room busy completing half samples until the new season's ideas began. Prophetically, I put a pleated, very low-cut, sleeveless top on top of a pair of loosely pleated pants, all in tissue faille.

A great item was born! It went into the showroom and immediately started selling. At that time, I saw them whenever I went out, including at Studio 54 and popular venues all over. My customers said it made them look ten pounds thinner. I've always been able to do this in designing clothing. More than fifty different jumpsuit styles were developed in a five- to eight-year time frame, in all sorts of fabrics for all seasons. No one quite had the same fit, and the jumpsuit remains the iconic contribution of my career. It was the mainstay of my business, and though it faded out for a long period of time, jumpsuits are making their come-back in the fashion world!
